Students share favorite ways to relax during finals week
2:39 AM, Dec. 6, 2012 |

For students with the finals week jitters, Strozier has you covered.

It all kicks off with the University Counseling Center’s Stress Buster Day event, held on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s just a fun day where we offer free massages and free activities that help you relax and enjoy yourself and have some fun,” said Nikki Pritchett, director of the Counseling Center, in a past interview. “There’ll be lots of good information about healthy diet, healthy lifestyle, but fun stuff and lots of goodies to take home.”

There will also be hot chocolate and games with plenty of prizes.

Before attending the event, students can take the anonymous online “Test Your Mood” quiz at counseling.fsu.edu in order to assess problem areas that it would be beneficial to speak to the Counseling Center about.

After Stress Buster Day, Strozier offers more stress aid events beginning on Sunday, Dec. 9. From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., students can participate in “Boogie Breaks,” along with receiving free sunglasses for wearing FSU gear and sampling coffee outside the library offered by Christian Campus Fellowship.

On Monday, students can take more Boogie Breaks and enjoy breakfast at 1 a.m. Free sunglasses will be offered to anyone wearing pajamas, and LEONES will be serving coffee in front of the library.

Tuesday students can participate in yoga and learn about ways to battle stress. Anyone wearing a crazy hat will earn more free sunglasses; don’t forget the free coffee.

The stress-battling fun ends on Wednesday, Dec. 12 with a game night at 8 p.m., ugly sweater night, and the opportunity to play golf, basketball, Nerf gun and Twister.
If you can’t attend any of these events, students have some advice on how they handle stress, which they hope will benefit others.

“I usually just stop whatever I am doing, even if it’s school work,” Justin Immerman said. “I just walk away from it for a little bit and let myself get distracted.”

Clearing the mind is one effective way to de-stress, but some students have specific methods they enjoy.

“I like to watch ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ and laugh,” Sandy Chikerotis said.

Sam Lee said he also likes to watch TV and is taking advantage of the Christmas season to do it, even though he can’t remember what it’s like to live without stress.

“What is this thing you call de-stress?” Lee said jokingly. “I like drinking hot cocoa and watching the 25 Days of Christmas on ABC Family.”

Entertainment provides a welcome relief, but putting time into hobbies is another good way to calm the nerves, according to Sara Cox.

“My favorite way to de-stress would probably be to bake something or paint,” Cox said. “I really enjoy doing both.”

And for students who don’t want to relax alone, Daniel Strehle has a remedy.

“I prefer to de-stress by hanging out with friends and laughing until my sides hurt,” Strehle said.

Fresh out of high school and fresh on their own, it’s the student’s first year at college. There’s the fresh start, the new friends, the new ritual binge drinking and of course the new freedoms of becoming an adult. The one thing that isn’t fresh for this freshman of Florida State is the feared Freshman 15.

The phrase was coined in 1985 by The Chicago Tribune and then publicized throughout the 1990’s has in many ways become a rite of passage, the weight gain being fully adopted into the college lifestyle. Though it may be more commonly know as the Freshman 15, the exact amount of weight gained on average is still argued.

While some students may reach and even exceed this seemingly random number, studies show a more likely gain of seven pounds. Florida State’s very own Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences Professor Jasminka Ilich-Ernst, Ph.D, conducted her own study “The freshman weight gain phenomenon revisited” with her colleagues in 2009, finding that of the students that gained weight, it was an average of 6.6 pounds for Florida State. This is significantly less than 15 but the Freshman 6.6 doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

“In our study of male students at FSU, we found that those who live on campus consume more calories than those who live off campus because of the meal plan. The dining facilities offer all this food that’s tasteful and it’s so hard to resist, so students eat as much they can,” Illich-Ernst said. “Still usually the fruit and vegetable servings are lower than the recommended three to five servings a day.”

While students may be supplied with an abundance of food by the dining halls, if they are not used properly, the meals are still nutritionally lacking in their day-to-day diets.

“Probably not all of the students who come to FSU are ready to take on the responsibility of a meal plan because they are busy, rushing through stressed. Whatever it is that’s on their mind might not always be what’s the best choice of food to take rather than the food they like which is probably not always nutritionally the best option,” Illich-Ernst said. “As long as they have all the options without limits I think the majority of students will choose the easier way in their busy schedules opposed to fruits and vegetables, which are rarely favorites of people in general.”

Professor Jasminka Ilich-Ernst did however note that students would benefit from nutrition classes being a requirement, using her research on female students and calcium intake. Those who had previously had classes or knowledge on nutrition or health had higher intakes of calcium, making it safe to assume that by making students aware of what their body needs they would then in turn have a healthier diet overall.

A problem that has become more alarming than the gaining of the Freshman 15 over the years is the fear of it and the measures students will take to avoid the extra weight on the their sides or thickness of their thighs. Florida State’s Dr. Pamela Keel, the director of clinical training, decided to dedicate her career to the very real problem of eating disorders and the factors that may lead to them both biologically and psychologically.

“I think eating behaviors are fascinating and an essential portion of adolescent and young adults as individuals. Eating behaviors are something that cause significant impairment across the different forms of mental eating disorders—these being associated with one of the highest risks of premature death. It’s very clinically significant,” Keel said. “It struck me as a topic for which we had dangerously little information and something I could make a difference in."

Since beginning her career, Keel has focused heavily on women. Females are the most common participants of binging and purging for weight loss, trying to achieve the picture perfect bodies seen in the media. In a recent unpublished study done by Keel, it was confirmed that men’s desire between their actual weight and their desire to lose weight was much stronger than that of women.

This showed in surveys by students that even at healthy weight ranges, women still have the desire to lose weight and when underweight they aim to maintain versus gain, an extremely unhealthy venture. Instead of the focus being one’s well-being, it has instead become about a number on a scale.

“Statistics across the nation support that a majority of adolescent and young adult women feel that they need to lose weight and have at some point in their life actually gone on a diet to lose weight,” Keel said. “A portion of these women are really in a healthy weight range.”

An alarming statistic provided by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported in a survey of 185 female college students that 58% felt pressured to be a certain weight. Of those students 83% were reported to diet in order to lose weight and this is where the problem comes in. Forty-four-percent of that 83 were of average weight. Healthy eating and exercising aren’t always fast enough for the rapid-paced lifestyle of a college student, dedicated to the here-and-now.

According to Natalia Zunino, Ph.D, of the American Anorexia and Bulimia Association, dieting is the most common behavior that leads to an eating disorder, so when the pounds don’t drop a student desires they turn to other methods.

“Eating disorders absolutely occur at FSU and yes there are undergrads struggling with it. Even if they weren’t here we certainly live in a culture that emphasizes thinness as an ideal of beauty,” Keel said. “The truth is that there is a kind of inescapable quality to our culture’s emphasis on thinness for women and even men. Coming to college one of the things that happens is now you’re surrounded by a bunch of peers who are basically being targeted by all of those same messages.”

Contrary to those counting calories, however, is freshman Brent Pristnpon, the average weight, three-meals-a-day adolescent who packs 1,848 calories into a single sitting at Suwannee dining hall compared to the daily recommended 2,500.

“It’s a lot nicer to have the unlimited buffet because parents work so you don’t always have a cooked meal, when you come here you always have food,” Pristnpon said. “I’ve known how much I’ve been eating here compared to the recommended intake but it’s just not a worry for me, I exercise and go to the gym.”

Though this freshman’s body may have adapted to the additional intake there is the large majority who are not active or fortunate enough. The benefit that Pristnpon mentioned of having a meal plan instead becomes a new version of the Battle of the Bulge.

“Having a meal plan in which you’re given access over a limited period of time to as much food as you can eat is a great way to support excessive food intake, especially with self-serve cereal,” Keel said. “When you’re in high school and at home, it’s not like somebody says ‘Okay, you can come in, you’re going to pay your money and eat as much as you possibly can and then you’re going to leave and we’re not going to give you access to food.’ … As an environmental context it can be very challenging.”

So poses the question of where fault lies and what should be done about it. Is it the parent’s fault for coddling their children, the school systems fault for not making nutrition classes a requirement, the university’s fault for neglecting to put a limit on the food they offer or the student’s fault for not being able to take responsibility just yet for their own well being? Or is it a combination of these factors? The fact that a good amount of freshman will experience weight gain is inevitable but how they choose to cope with it is solely up to them as they enter into adulthood.

A female diner was rolled out of Las Vegas themed restaurant The Heart Attack Grill on a stretcher after she collapsed.

The woman had been eating a double bypass burger, smoking cigarettes and drinking a margarita shortly before she was fell to the floor unconscious and had to be wheeled out by paramedics.

It was the second medical emergency at the restaurant which glorifies unhealthy eating and offers free meals to people over 350 pounds. Its menu includes items such as flatliner fries and butterfat shakes

The restaurant chain – founded in 2005 using the catchphrase ‘Taste Worth Dying For!’ – is run by a former nutritionist ‘Doctor’ Jon Basso who, remarkably, used to run a Jenny Craig weight loss diet centre.

Meals can exceed 8,000 calories. The recommended daily intake is 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 for men.

The Triple Bypass Burger contains three slabs of meat, 12 rashes of bacon, cheese, red onion, sliced tomato and the Heart Attack Grill’s own ‘unique special sauce’.

And that’s before taking into account the accompanying ‘Flatliner Fries’, cooked in pure lard, and a giant soft drink.

Sometimes the idea for a beautiful food comes right to you. It comes to you in a moment of complete clarity and serenity and you so easily know where you want to go with it.

The best ideas are usually a continuation of ones previously thought of; this is not plagiarism, it’s refining, it’s advancing. Only a true master of the arts can take something that was already introduced and make it better, only a legitimate wizard of culinary art can evolve that which has already been established. Anybody can get a Wartortle. It takes a true master to get a ballin’ ass Blastoise.

A classic combination for foodgoers of McDonald’s was to get a McDouble and a McChicken, and place the latter inside the former. It’s a delicious and cheap way to push the boundaries of your body’s ability to process food. You get the best of both worlds and you won’t eat for another 48 hours. Everybody wins.

However, we don’t do things small around these parts. We tackle Sasquatch head on, we conquer Kenghis Khan. That’s why we aren’t going to make this delicious union cheaply. We’re going to get the best burger and the best chicken sandwich and join them in holy matrimony.

We’re going to put Chik-Fil-A inside of Five Guys.

Just saying those words out loud will raise your blood pressure and your happiness level. It’s one of the most ambitious and ingenious ideas that we’ve attempted in our journey across the culinary universe, and it could be the most worth it.

Go to Five Guys first, since that’ll be the longer process. Head out to the one on Thomasville Road, they’re really nice and when they heard about the adventure, they were more than on board. We got a normal double cheeseburger with a side of fries, because Five Guys fries are a rare and beautiful delicacy. We took our burgers and our tiny sticks of happiness and drove on down to Chick-fil-A, grabbed a sandwich and a large lemonade.

First things first, you throw some Chik-fil-A sauce on the sandwich. The sauce is comparable to Guthrie’s sauce, in the way that I would bless my children with. It is the one true sauce, sent down through divine intervention to save our souls and reveal the light in our lives.

Open up the burger and stick the sandwich inside. Take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for your moment. Your life will never be the same again, in the most beautiful and terrible way.

It’s an explosion of differing flavors; one moment you taste the burger, then the next the sauce, then suddenly the chicken and then the cheese. It’s life-changing. That’s only the way to put it.

The journey is one of the more expensive ones we’ve taken, with the cost being anywhere from eight to fourteen dollars, and it will make you feel sleepy and fat afterwards, but it’s a calming sort of fat, like where you’re slowly drifting off into death but all you can feel is elation. It’s one of my favorites so far, and it definitely worth the mental and physical toll.
